We provide an introduction to the symposium. During the Great Recession of 2008-09 most economies experienced a downturn in economic activity and tax revenues fell as a result. In some cases revenue fell dramatically. Many governments sought alternative sources of revenue. The purpose of the Symposium is to investigate the characteristics and use of consumption oriented taxes.
